The Zombie Apocalypse

In a Box

Outbreak is a cooperative board game for 1 to 8 players. You play as a survivor group in a

post-apocalyptic world where you are trying to protect the Survivor City from the zombie hordes, before they reach the Main Base and kill the helpless inside. Players control a skilled survivor or team of survivors (in solo play), that must work together to fight back the hordes of zombies.

Outbreak Review

BGG Review from WarthogRampage

I had the unrivaled pleasure of playtesting Outbreak a few months back, and I was blown away. It's an amazing game, with so many great elements. It's a co-op, resource management, puzzle, push your luck, area control, custom dice roller that had me standing up and moving around the table to try and figure out what to do next.

You control a group of survivors during the zombie apocalypse, each with their own unique special skills. Your job is to protect the main base from the hordez by collecting resources, building fortifications, and rolling dice. There are also skill and fortune cards that can help you along the way, and they do a great job of balancing out any shortcomings your group might have.

Over time doom cards will start appearing, and this is really when the game starts to pile on the pressure. They force you to adapt your plans and really serve to increase the tension, especially if you get three at once (which tends to happen to me). For me this did a great job of simulating the panic and desperation you'd expect when the dead rise again.

Eventually you'll trigger the boss battle, which I find to be a nice thematic way to bring the game to an end. Even if you defeat the boss, the hordez will charge towards your base in order to finish you off.

The art style is refreshingly bright for the theme. Talking about theme, in a market filled with zombie games I think that Outbreak still manages to bring something different to the table. Personally I can't wait to get my hands on a final version of this game.
